A trekking in the Fanes - Senes - Braies Natural Park it was the wonderful experience of my last weekend spent in South Tyrol that offered me breathtaking views like the one you can see in the opening photo of this article!
The Fanes - Senes - Braies Natural Park created in 1980, it has an area of over 25,000 hectares which makes it one of the largest parks in South Tyrol. It offers excursions suitable for everyone, families, simple trekking enthusiasts or mountaineers looking for peaks to climb and allows you to enjoy spectacular views of the Dolomites, included in the Unesco World Heritage Site.
To gather information on the area, on possible excursions and to receive maps and information brochures, the ideal place is the new one Fanes Visitor Center - Senes - Braies located in via Katharina Lanz 96, in San Vigilio di Marebbe.
During my visit I appreciated the interactivity of the set-ups, with video installations and models of the area to be explored in order to plan possible itineraries, as well as the kindness of the manager, Matteo, who accompanied me on the visit with interesting explanations.
The refuge that hosted me for the two nights of overnight stay was the Pederù, located about 12 km from San Vigilio di Marebbe, in the heart of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Natural Park and an ideal starting point for numerous trekking routes.
More than many words, I think this photo I took can give you an idea from the terrace of my room (!) to the Rifugio Pederù … :-)
The Pederù refuge, managed by the Frenner Pisching family, offers its guests comfortable rooms furnished in South Tyrolean style or beds in an area that serves as a hostel.
At the Pederù you can also taste the typical dishes of South Tyrol and receive valuable advice on the best itineraries to follow both in summer and in winter.
Definitely useful is the transfer taxi service offered on request to guests, which will allow you to reach Bressanone by train (as I did!) And then be picked up by Walter, the owner, who will take you to the refuge.

The Pederù hotel - refuge, near San Vigilio di Marebbe
The itinerary of mine trekking in the Fanes - Senes - Braies Natural Park it then started right in front of the Pederù Refuge, along the path (rather steep initially) that leads to the Fodara Vedla / Senes huts.
At a decidedly slow pace that allowed me to get to high altitude without sweating and appreciating the views among the trees on the surrounding mountains and valleys, I reached the Fodara Vedra refuge and its meadows in about 1 hour, overcoming a difference in height of 536 meters for a distance of 2.7 Km, based on the GPS data of my TomTom Multisport. The sky was not clear but the view of the Fodara meadows was still very fascinating as you can see from this short video I shot as soon as I arrived on the plateau ...
After doing the "Full of fuel" (= tagliatelle with chanterelles + omelette with cranberries! :-) at the refuge Fodara Vedla and having greeted the "true host of the refuge" (immortalized in the photo below), I continued the itinerary towards Alpe di Senes.
The path in the midst of larches and mountain pines climbs slowly and without jolts and is within everyone's reach, even less trained hikers and children, while always having to pay the necessary attention to possible slips.
After about 40 minutes I arrived at Alpe Senes where new suggestive views open up ...
Thanks to the careful eye of Iaco, the guide who accompanied me, I was also able to identify one marmot peeking out of its lair at the base of a boulder. Here it is ... can you see it? :-)
Our trekking it continued through the meadows until you reach one of the most beautiful views of the day, that of the Ampezzo Dolomites, with the Croda Rossa and the Cristallo that I chose as the opening photo of this article.
So it was time to set out along the way back but other surprises awaited me: a family of roe deer a few hundred meters away and the mythical edelweiss!
There would be many other photos of the trekking in the Fanes - Senes - Braies Natural Park that I would like to share in this article of mine but perhaps it is better that I leave you the pleasure of planning a visit, perhaps following the second part of the map of my itinerary: from the Fedora Vedla Refuge, around the Alpe di Senes, along the path 27 which with a circular itinerary he brought us back to the valley, to the Pederù Refuge.
The weekend in South Tyrol in the Fanes - Senes - Braies Natural Park it was also a new opportunity to go back for a walk to Plan de Corones, where a race of mountain bike downhill and where I was able to visit the splendid for the second time Messner Mountain Museum, designed in its architectural structure by the studio of Zaha Hadid, one of the most famous and talented architects in the world.
This is where the friendMarco Valmaranahe immortalized me contemplating the Dolomites from the museum's panoramic terrace. Here is the photo of Marco (whom I thank) below… I returned the favor anyway, huh! ;-)
