Bio-lakes or bio-pools, let's dive into this completely green adventure, worlds in which a good bathroom is not at the expense of the environment that surrounds us but is perfectly integrated. Indeed, an opportunity to get in touch more deeply with nature and increase the sense of respect we feel for it.
Bio-lakes: what they are
THE bio lakes they are ornamental and bathing freshwater basins which, as just mentioned, are able to integrate perfectly with the surrounding ecosystem. This means first of all not doing him any harm. So here are some mirrors of water that are artificial but not "bad" because the purification takes place with the use of natural elements and not with artificial and traditional water treatment systems.
Mainly plants and gravel are used, able to make bathing waters. This type of purification process, called phytoremediation, makes sure that chemical preparations such as chlorine can be left alone, thus avoiding substances such as that, and others even more harmful, from being poured into the sewage systems or in the surrounding land.
DIY bio-lakes: construction
To buildbio lakes it is good to understand what the practice consists of, after having clearly stated how green and environmentally friendly it is. It works like an aquarium: the water passes through a filtering mass consisting of ad hoc microorganisms that take care of eliminating organic waste present and reducing them to mineral elements which are in turn assimilated by plants.
There structure of bio lakes consists of two areas that can be either directly in contact, or almost, or connected but separated by a wall just above the surface of the water. We therefore have the mass of water that is pushed through a rather thick layer where a biological filtering.
In fact, there is volcanic material, in this separation, and through microorganisms as well as mechanical processes, the water is purified thanks to the porosity of the material itself. Then it also passes through the marsh plants that finish the work until crystal clear water is obtained. Zero chlorine and zero risk of mosquitoes: this is not stagnant water.
Biolaghi: the Onlus Biolaghiegiardini.it
This non-profit organization dedicated to bio lakes was born from a very green project that aims to spread a new concept of sustainability and well-being, a concept that intersects various sectors including tourism, health, green wellness, lifestyle, cuisine.
The association is specifically called Biolaghetto Italy, is now three years old and comes to frame decades of well-established synergy between five experienced entrepreneurs of bio lakes. Together they continue with this project to disseminate not only the concept of bio-lake or bio-pool, but also to support the development of the green areas that host them in various areas of the peninsula.
Still too few, if you look at the rest of Europe, especially the Nordic countries, more than widespread, lifestyle, private and public, reduce the environmental impact and "save" natural resources, protect the territory, recovering and protecting its biodiversity.
Biolago Sasso Pisano
Near the paths of the fumaroles, the biancane and the archaeological excavations of the Etruscan-Roman baths of Bagnonand there is this bio-lake where we can still observe natural geothermal manifestations. Here there is a bathing complex where it is possible to understand what i bio lakes and also enjoy it fully, in total relaxation. And with the serenity of knowing that everything is powered by the hot springs of the surrounding area and by the cold waters heated with the geothermal district heating.
In the structure around the Sasso Pisano bio-lake a calidarium with water at 36 degrees and whirlpool, a tepidarium and obviously a phyto-purified lake at room temperature. It is an all-Italian example of how it is possible to recover and enhance the geothermal in its natural and "good" side, linking it to bathing and thermalism as in ancient times.
Biolago Monclassico
And the first bio-lake in Trentino, it is located in Val di Sole, in Monclassico, and consists of a swimming lake of about 500 square meters, a maximum of 3 meters deep. This bio-lake is surrounded and enriched by nature, by a paradise of aquatic plants that are also purifying, oxygenating and shading.
For example the primula palustris or hardy water lilies. In perfect harmony with the environment, we can therefore enjoy the pool, swim in fresh water with an average temperature of around 26-27 ° C. For children there is also a playground, for everyone a pleasant bar area.
Biolaghi: video
In this video we can hear the adventure ofCa 'Amedeo farmhouse with low environmental impact with a bio-lake and tank for koi carp. We are in the countryside of Castelfranco Veneto and this paradise can welcome us in 20 mini lodgings, in the silence of the Treviso area. It is liked by both foreigners and the most curious and attentive Italians, and not only in summer: the bio-lake has its charm even in autumn and winter because nature never ceases to amaze with colors and scenery from a painting.
We will hear from the same owners of this beautiful property as the maintenance of bio lakesis really simple: just make the usual traditional robot act to clean the bottom and take care of mowing the plants of phytoremediation at the end of the season. The costs, as we will see later, are very low compared to non-organic basins: no chemicals are used here and the pumps for maintaining the water in circulation are all low-consumption.
Bio-pools: design
To design bio-pools or bio lakes it is absolutely necessary to identify a correct and adequate area to be dedicated to the actual purification, where bathing is inhibited. And then there will also be the one where you can take baths. In addition, it is necessary to think of the water surface cleaning systems, using skimmers, made to measure, because the leaves must be collected as well as some dirt that "lands" on the surface of the bio lakes from above.
In the case of bio lakes, we have an artisanal and non-standardized product, with a design decided by nature and wild. For the bio-poolsInstead, the presence of stairs, elements in wood or stone, fountains, waterfalls, bridges and whoever has more ideas, propose them are also planned. There are those who introduce lights or sunbathing areas, integrated into the project, always in full respect of the environment in which they are inserted.
Biopiscine: legislation
The country to refer to for a reference, regarding the regulations on bio lakes and similar, it is the European country that has invested the most: Germany. Already in 1999 the German Society for Natural Bathing Waters it was created on purpose to promote natural bathing water and biological water purification.
In this way it was possible to create quality standards by identifying necessary factors and prerequisites for the diffusion of bathing lakes. In the presence of such a "guarantee" scenario, it is obvious that in a few years bio lakes and bio-pools have been created in large numbers, all with rigorous green water treatment.
There are now around 150 public natural swimming pools and more in Germany 500 bio lakes and natural pools in hotels, campsites and spas. Two examples are the Neuss natural wellness center “Wellneuss” and the big one natural pool of Mettmann. The latter is particularly interesting because it is a conversion of a pre-existing one, carried out in 2004, resulting in a new plant that meets the criteria of the ecological pool: no chemicals but phytoremediation.
Bio-pools: costs
If it is a question of creating and, even earlier, of designing bio lakes or bio pools, the costs do not differ much. But when you look at maintenance, then the question changes: managing a bio-lake and managing a bio-swimming pool are two completely obligatory business. In practice and in expenses. The first is therefore more "autonomous" cheaper and it can be larger without becoming economically unfeasible.
Biolaghi and Biopiscine: differences
To avoid making the common mistake of confusing terms bio lakes and bio pools let's understand how they differ. Often we will hear them used as synonyms but there are not a few characteristics that do not coincide.
The bio-lake it is an artificial freshwater basin that reproduces a natural lake in shape and appearance: irregular profiles, raw materials and finishes included. There bio-pool instead it requires a different project and must be built according to canons of design… for swimming pools! Except that the water purification system will not use chemical agents but 100% natural methods.
Differences also in maintenance practices, much smaller for the bio lakes which have no closing seasons, so they should not be restored. The bio-pool has the advantage, however, that having a more regular shape, it is easier to clean even with traditional robots. These differences weigh on the price. -Unavoidable.
To get an idea for bio lakes of 100-200 sqm you spend an amount of 300-500 euros per square meter, for bio-pools from 60-150 per square meter, you spend 700 - 900 euros per square meter. This is by no means a way to discourage virtuous and important, and profitable, projects “Conversion” of traditional swimming pools into bio-pools: remember the resulting advantages of a reduced need for maintenance and greater purity and delicacy of the water compared to a normal pool.
