Flat-Coated Retriever, elegant hunting dog of the group of Retriever, impossible not to associate with its more famous cousins Golden Retriever is Labrador Retriever. This dog has nothing to envy to them, he comes from Great Britain with high hopes and a desire to elbow. To enter our hearts and the top ten of the breeds, as a retriever, as it is officially classified by the FCI, and also as a companion. As it is often understood by us who love dogs but don't go hunting.
Flat Coated Retriever: origins
The last standard of this breed was released by the British Kennel Club in late 1986 but the origins of the Flat Coated Retriever they date back many years and are quite documented. It descends from Newfoundland dog, almost for sure, crossed with the Irish setter, but on closer inspection, according to experts, even i have put a hand in its selection Labrador Retriever and of Curly-Coated Retriever. Predictable enough, I would say.
Even the progenitors of ours Flat Coated Retriever they were characterized by wavy hair, a characteristic all of its own which we will later see better: the first dog to walk with this originality was a precursor during the 1860 Birmingham exhibition.
This breed immediately spread to England, then lost ground compared to other similar ones because no official characters were fixed, after 1960 a recovery began and is gradually finding appreciation in the rest of the world. First of all in the USA., but also in many European countries, including Italy.
Flat Coated Retriever: appearance
Of medium abundant size, this dog is very similar, in appearance and also in character, to Newfoundland dog: at the withers males measure between 58 and 61 cm, females slightly less. The weight varies from 27 to 32 kg. The physique of this Retriever is sturdy and muscular, his expression intelligent, he does not move heavily but confidently and at the same time elegant.
The structure must give an idea of stability and strength, never of frailty. Starting from the skull, moderately broad, and from the jaws, not as long as those of the Curly-Coated Retriever, but absolutely capable of carrying a hare or a pheasant. And then the trunk, well shaped, with a short and straight tail, adorned with long hair, up to the head with a light stop, small and close-fitting ears, medium-sized eyes, dark brown or hazel.
The coat, with long, smooth hair, of fine and thick texture, can be only black or liver brown. A little fringe appears on the limbs and tail, which gives grace and sympathy to Flat Coated Retriever, while walking with a free and fluid gait, in the city or in the countryside.
Flat Coated Retriever: character
The serene and cheerful nature of Flat Coated Retriever they make it a desirable companion, not only if they are hunters, but also if they are simple lovers of beautiful dogs. The breed proves to be very sociable, adaptable to any type of place and climate, capable of maintaining character balance and extreme docility even in the apartment, in the family, in the home of singles or mismatched couples.
The only trick is to take it often to do movement, has a physical need for it because of the race to which it belongs. For the rest it does not require particular commitments, the coat is quite simple to keep neat and clean, then it is up to us to get infected by its perennial and constant joy, enthusiastic and, if you are not really pessimistic, contagious. Not for nothing is it defined the Peter Pan of dogs: he looks like an eternal child, he always wants to play, he has a constantly moving tail and two very intelligent eyes, ready to find a way to have fun with you.
Of course, if you are the cold type, I strongly advise against the Flat Coated Retriever: he is outgoing far beyond the famous Golden and Labradors, he loves to "kiss", jump on him, fight and even be hugged. However, he is confident and affectionate, for nothing in the world he will ever betray or abandon you. This particular nature of his makes him absolutely unsuitable for being confined to the garden. He could take it badly by making messes and teasing: goodbye flowers and plants, goodbye cured grass.
Flat Coated Retriever: breeding
In Italy so far registered on the Enci site there are 2 farms in Emilia Romagna and another 2 in Veneto, one in Friuli Venezia Giulia, 4 in Lombardy and another 3 in Tuscany. It's not about historical farms like the English ones but they have virtue and good habits.
To dedicate himself first to the selective breeding of Flat Coated Retriever it was Bond Moore, in Great Britain, of course: he is considered the True Father of the breed, but then it was H.E. Shirley to found the English Kennel Club in 1873 he also set up his kennel, the "Shirley Retrievers" specialized in Flat Coated Retriever with cloaks wavy and too fringed. In two moves, in a few decades, this breed has become the retriever par excellence: in 1905 there were 49 members of the Crufts, the most prestigious English dog show, and in 1920 there were 440 members of the Kennel Club.
Flat Coated Retriever: use
The Flat Coated Retriever as the Curly-coated, has always been a considered retriever excellent swimmer with marked olfactory and visual qualities, and a good tracker. Today, however, apart from some niche hunters, this breed is offered and welcomed almost exclusively as a pet.
The character and mental setting remain those of a working dog, and we must not forget it: this means that it remains very flexible and suitable for excelling in practically any discipline. from agility to obedience, from civil protection to freestyle.
The specialty of Flat Coated Retriever there is always the carryover, in the water, even better. Even if it is not used for hunting or for competitions such as the so-called PAR (aptitude tests for retrievers)organized by Italian Retriever Club, many recommend giving him at least some retrieve training. For his self-esteem and vitality it is better not to treat him as an ornament, a sofa cushion or a garden figurine. It needs to do, to play, to act.
Flat Coated Retriever yellow
Until 1913, it appears that i Golden Retriever were taken for Yellow Flat Coated Retrievers. In truth, once that breed was born and recognized, yellow specimens of our Flat continue to exist. To avoid overlap and misunderstanding, the color has been excluded from the Standard. So we have Flat Coated Retriever black or liver, as seen.
On this fact, studies on the DNA of stallions and mares were also carried out to understand the transmissibility of unwanted color, but only for shows. Yes, because in truth yellow does not involve any problems and that i Flat yellow they are Flat like everyone else. And as far as I know, the Golden Retriever he is not the type to be offended or jealous.
